THINGS UPCOMING:

1. Show THIS FRIDAY, JULY 30TH @ The Someday Lounge in Portland, OR. I’m first on, so come early. THIS IS A SHOW OF FIRSTS: My first show with LIVE VISUALS (by Jessey Zepeda) and I’ll be debuting much of the new material from the new album (due out in Fall). Oh and not to mention a SLAMMIN’ line-up brought to you by People Music Productions, consisting of Sutro, Rena Jones and L.A., Low End Theory beat-master NOBODY. I’m so looking forward to this! Hope to see some familiar faces out there!

2. Upcoming shows: 8/26 @ Branx, PDX….9/20 @ Ground Kontrol, PDX (DJ set (!))…possibly some dates in SEATTLE later this fall as well. (yay)

3. Also, this fall, look for remix I did for my former schoolmates, Classics (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Classics/204978142952?ref=ts). Lovely music, lovely people. I had so much fun doing the remix. I’ll let you know when you can get it.

4. Collaboration in the works with my former choir conductor, Daniel Paulson and his stellar women’s choir, Vox Musica (http://www.voxmusica.net/). We’re working on combining the textures of classical and electronic in a new and profound way. I am SO stoked about this. I may even get to have the choir sing some of my original songs. (!)

5. Last but certainly not least, the new album, Expressor, is coming along sooo well, I am SO proud of it and can’t wait to put it out. The love of my life, Chris Green, is mixing it beautifully! I’m shooting for an October release, so bear with me.

Just checking in quickly. I know I said I’d blog more, but then I decided I should probably just try to get this new record out ; )

I have been living in my headphones, for real. But I’m really excited about the new stuff. Loving it, in fact.

How “live” is your electronic set?

I may be an electronic musician rockin’ the laptop and controllers on stage, but I come from a very traditional, musically educated and “live band” type of background. So when I began conceptualizing my live set for this very nontraditional and electronic music, I was presented with a variety of conundrums centered around one major question: when your computer can literally do everything for you, what do you choose to execute live and why?

My first goal in taking my music out live was to try to bring the experience that I have creating the music in the studio to the stage. I wanted to display the improvisational energy that comes through me (and all artists, I think) when I create on the fly. My favorite live artists all do this. These artists range from blues and jazz guys to dubstep DJs. No matter the genre, instrument or background, they all can bring that raw inspired energy that you just can’t buy on a record. To be in the presence of creation is a beautiful thing. (And who wants to hear a band or solo artist just play a replica of their record anyway? Not me.)

After about a year and a half of experimenting with my set-up, some of which happened live and most of which happened at home, I think I’ve finally come up with a cocktail that works for me:

1. a Mac running Ableton Live, which runs samplers, tracks, loops, and all effects (including my vocal effects) controlled by an Akai APC-40 and MPD 16

2. a Korg R3 synth with all my favorite presets

3. me, sanging my little heart out

The biggest and continuing challenge for me is learning how to play my controller as though it were any other instrument. I’ve been singing and playing keys for many years but learning “controllerism” and in that, elements of DJ-ing, really has been a baffling, yet exhilarating and stimulating experience. Getting into this has effected my view of arrangement and the ebb and flow of a set better than any music class I took ever did. It’s even informed my in-studio production tremendously.

My live set, like all aspects of my life, will continue to grow and change. Technology today has made the possibilities endless. I very much look forward to exploring as many as I can.

Ok, so I started a tumblr site a few months back with the hopes that it would motivate me to blog a bit more about my general musings relating to (but not limited to) my music and inspirations. Turns out, I haven’t done much of that…yet.

After a great talk with a close friend I’ve decided to commit myself to writing on this thing more often in an effort to connect with y’all on a deeper level and give myself a chance to express myself in yet another way. I’m really interested in sharing more about what I continue to learn daily as an artist and a person.
